Cayuga County Sheriff's Road Patrol Deputy

The Members of the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, Road Patrol Division, are responsible for the protection of lives and property and the enforcement of law and ordinances in Cayuga County.   A Deputy Sheriff assists in the investigation of offenses, the apprehension of violators, and conducts routine patrol operations in accordance with standard departmental operating procedures.

Date of Examination:

Must be at least 19 years of age (not eligible if 35 years of age or older, unless there is qualifying military duty to take exam)

Date of Appointment:

  • Must be 20 years of age
  • Must be a resident of Cayuga County
  • Must be a high school graduate, possess a GED or possess a U.S. Armed Forces General Education Certificate
  • Must possess a valid NYS Driver’s license

Special Requirements at Time of Appointment:

  • Must meet the physical and medical standards as established by Cayuga County
  • Must successfully complete psychological exam
  • No felony convictions. Misdemeanor conviction or other offences may bar appointment
  • Must satisfactorily complete the Basic Course of Police Officers

Salary Base:

  • Probationary $51,990
  • After 6 mos. $53,110
  • Pay raises pursuant to current Cayuga County Deputy Sheriff’s Police Association Contract

Vacation: 

  • 10 days after 1 year continuous employment. Increases at various anniversary dates

Personal Leave: 

  • 8 hours per year

Cayuga County Sheriff Custody Officer

The Cayuga County Jail is a maximum security 212-bed facility. It houses both male and female sentenced and unsentenced prisoners, as well as minors aged 16-18.  It is mandated to be in compliance with the many complex and detailed minimum standards set forth by the New York State Commission of Correction.

As a Sheriff Custody Officer, you are responsible for the enforcement of rules and regulations governing the custody, security, conduct, discipline, safety and general well-being of inmates at the Cayuga County Jail. Duties involve considerable inmate contact and supervision in a work, recreation or learning environment, as well as transporting inmates for court appearances and supervision for outside work details. 

Date of Examination:

  • Must be at least 20 years of age

Date of Appointment:

  • Must be a resident of Cayuga County or 6 contiguous counties: Cortland, Onondaga, Oswego, Seneca, Tompkins or Wayne
  • Must be a high school graduate, possess a GED or possess a U.S. Armed Forces General Education Certificate
  • Must possess a valid NYS Driver’s license

Special Requirements at Time of Appointment:

  • Must meet the physical and medical standards as established by Cayuga County
  • Must successfully complete psychological exam
  • No felony convictions. Misdemeanor conviction or other offences may bar appointment
  • Successful completion of the New York State Commission of Corrections Basic Training and Peace Officer Training prior to completion of the probationary period.

  • After 6 mos. $47,468
  • Pay raises pursuant to current contract of the Sheriff’s Employees Association of Cayuga County, Inc.
